A quality assessment system must be established for excessive heart stent surgery
Edited by Sharon Lai
July 02, 2010 In China, there are 230 million patients with cardiovascular disease, of which every 10 seconds one person dies. Currently, heart stent surgery is so significantly increased that experts have called on to establish a quality assessment system for the surgery. In 2009, it is reported that there were 240,000 cases of heart stent surgery. Compared with 180,000 cases in 2008, it is increased by 33.4%. "I am worried about the increase of some data. For instance, among the patients taken heart stent surgery, 12% has less than 50% of angiostenosis, and one third has less than 75%. Moreover, moderate and mild cases take a large proportion." Said Hu Dayi, a health education expert, who is a chairman of Cardiology of Chinese Medical Society. Furthermore, Hu pointed out that a considerable number of patients needed no stent implanted, while most of them had more than 3 stents placed. What is more, Hu compared heart stent surgery in Europe with in China. In Europe, less than 2 stents are needed in each case. However, in China, the number is 3.5. Instead of heart bypass surgery, excessive interventional procedure for stent surgery is being taken. An authoritative expert in cardiology indicated the existence of mislead given by some doctors in the option of bypass surgery and stent surgery. On the whole, it is directly related to lower risk and more profit for hospitals. pd:July 02, 2010 | md:July 02, 2010
