There are 14,000 medical device manufacturers and more than 40,000 distributors in China, which own more than RMB 300 billion market capacity and record over 20% annual output value and market increase. However, China¡¯s national medical device industry occupies less than 3% of the international medical device market.

　　Jiang Feng (姜峰), the vice-chairman of Chinese Medical Device Industry Society though that inability to grasp technology of key component was one of the hurdles in upgrading of Chinese medical device industry. Although many of the domestic enterprises are able to rapidly imitate products of foreign enterprises, they cannot replicate the key components, especially the core components with relatively high costs that are all dependent on imports from abroad. Innovation of medical devices is the biggest problem of our national medical device industry

　　The "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" of medical devices has already been officially incorporated into the major project of the Ministry of Science and Technology. As proposed in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" that the new medical and health resources began to focus more on rural and urban communities, the demands in primary medical institutions for medical devices are also unprecedentedly inflated. During this period, the research will aim at the demand of grass-roots level for low-end medical devices and innovation of basic equipments will become the development point. At the same time, a number of mainstream medical device enterprises also said they would made a break-through in plenty of high-end products, as a way to change the dependence of products used in first-class hospital at Grade 3 on importation.

　　Zhang Zhaofeng (张兆丰), the Division Chief of Biotechnology and Medicine Department of Social Development Sector of State Ministry of Science and Technology believed that it was necessary to create a mode of high-end products-led low-end products and -radiated to grass-roots level products. At present, the difficulty in promoting the optimization of medical device industry chain lies in the combination of "production, study, research and application". The enterprises should play an important role in the investment and share interest with relevant technology developed by universities, while manufacturers producing pertinent core components should also form an interest correlation with other manufacturers producing entire equipment. The cooperation mechanism of "production, study, research and application" has not yet had an actual effect in China. To break through the bottleneck, firstly a medical device technology innovation alliance should be established. It intends to organize the dominant enterprises and research institutes, medical institutions to jointly implement production of common spare parts and technology as well as localization process of important products, and at the same time, to provide consulting services of support for enterprises by relevant ministries and commissions, e.g., "Bai Shi Qian Wan Project" promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Public Health. It will provide support and services for the development and industrialization of innovated products; put social capitals into medical device field to combine national technological achievement transform funds by the Ministry of Science and Technology, therefore to realize the real butt joint of innovation and capitals.
