According to an authoritative survey, among the medical devices in China, which are from 175,000 medical and health institutions, 15% were produced around 70's in 20th century, and 60% were before the mid-80s. Thus it is indicated that replacement is needed and Chinese medical device market will grow rapidly in the next 10 years or more.

Currently, there are 13,000 hospitals and 52,000 health clinics in China, having more than 300 million beds. If 13,000 hospitals can basically meet the Japanese medical device standards in 1980 (800,000 yuan per 100 beds), the increased market sales of medical devices in China will be more than 24 billion yuan.

At present, medical devices in the basic public health services network are far from adequate. Furthermore, equipments for general testing are even absent in many health clinics. Therefore, disease prevention still relies on stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors and needles.

According to "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", the "new rural cooperative medical care" pilot would be throughout 60% area of all counties, cities and districts in China in 2007. And in 2008, the "new rural cooperative medical care" would be basically implemented nationwide. As planned in 2010, the project will be beneficial for almost all of the rural residents. In 2004, the per capita health care cost in urban population was 1,261 yuan, while it was 301 yuan in rural population.

Supposed that it takes 5, 10, 15 years respectively to catch up with the per capita health care cost in urban population in 2004, the per capita health care cost will be increased by 33%, 15% and 10% every year correspondingly. Obviously, domestic companies, producing low-and-middle medical devices, will benefit a lot.

As a result of statistics, low-and-middle medical device market share is about 75%, and is much higher than the global level that is 45%. Henceforth, a medical device engineer said, medical devices in China should be multi-functional, which could be used in diagnosis, treatment, testing, analysis, rehabilitation and some other fields simultaneously
