The Development Trend of Powered Surgical Instruments

Powered surgical instruments are the medical devices which can provide rotary power and control and accomplish the mechanical scalpel, such as drilling, milling, sawing, digging and grinding, to bone tissue or other applicable tissue in clinic operation by driving the terminal scalpels through the driver.

At present, the powered surgical instruments have become necessary medical devices in surgery, especially in minimally invasive surgery. With the increasing demand, the powered surgical instruments have become a new category of medical device industry. Meanwhile, the design and engineering research of powered surgical instruments have been further developed and its product line is gradually enriched and updated. The key technical research of powered surgical instruments in the future will focus on the following five aspects:

1. Research on digitalization and intelligence of the host computer control system to realise the precision and efficiency of power output and transmit control with more functions.

2. Research on the operator miniaturization: to meet the requirement of minimally invasive surgery for mini-size operator and tolerance of high temperature and pressure.

3. Research on flexible shaft technology: one kind is for technical research on the small diameter flexible shaft (<10mm) for host computer power output and transmission; the other kind is for technical research on mini-size flexible shaft (<2mm) which provides the directional transmit function via the transmit handset.

4. Research on high-speed micro motor: to meet the requirement for small size, high speed and disinfection under a certain extent of power.

5. The development of scalpel series: concerning the requirement of material, precise processing technology and meeting the requirement of various clinic operations.

Powered surgical instruments will develop towards technology and application standardization. Technology standardization means that the products should be strictly classified and manufacture daccording to the technology standard; application standardization means to use products according to clinical application criterion. Meanwhile, powered surgical instruments will be developed and integrated with endoscope technology.

The product line of powered surgical instruments will expand from traditional scalpel to powered digital operation robots with intelligence, and the application mode will develop towards specialization and serialization, which will form the correspondence relationship between products and operation types. It is predicted that the products will realize serial application for special departments such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, otolaryngology and plastic surgery.

China powere dsurgical instrument industry has come into shape late but developed rapidly. Chongqing Xishan Sci ence & Technology Co., Ltd.
